Notes

Please send a note any time your child is absent from school explaining the absence in order for it to be considered as excused.  All unexplained absences are considered to be unexcused.  Please also write a note to the PE teacher if your child has to miss PE.  Please be aware of the school’s policy on attendance in the handbook.

Do Not

Students should not bring items to school that are valuable or very special to them.  Please do not let students bring toys of any kind to school.  A toy will be taken up and kept until a parent comes in person to pick up the toy or until the last day of school.  I will not take a written request for a toy to be given back to a child.

Parties

You are welcome to give your child a birthday party at school.  Please notify me in advance in case there is a conflict.  We can now have parties in the room.  The lunchroom does not have an ice machine.  Please bring ice or have the drinks already cold.

I will send a sign up list for the holiday parties throughout the year.  If several parents sign up to bring the same thing, I’ll request you make another selection.  Please let me know in advance if you are not able to bring something you signed up to bring.  This will allow me time to find someone else.

Snack

Please make sure your child doesn’t bring sweets or caffeine drinks.  There are plenty of nutritious choices to bring or buy in the lunchroom.

How do I help my child in 5th Grade?

I’ve listed some suggestions below on how parents can help their child in 5th grade.

  1. Contact me as soon as you notice a problem with grades or behavior.  It’s too late to wait until the last of school to bring up grades.  Remember school gets harder as the year goes on.
  2. Have your child to read.  The more your child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him/her to incorporate new skills in reading and writing.
  3. Set high but realistic goals for your child.  Let your child know that you expect him/her to do his/her best in school.  Children often live up to others’ expectations.  This is also true for behavior.
  4. Avoid negative comments about school, teachers, or other students.  Children are quick to pick up on the attitude of others.  Never let your child know how much you hated school or how bad in a subject you were.  They will think this is alright for them.
  5. Show your child that homework is important to you and help them practice their basic skills if needed. A solid foundation in basic skills helps with higher order thinking.  Be a good educational role model and encourage learning in all areas.  Let your child see you reading and writing for enjoyment.
  6. If your child struggles, look over your child’s work.  Make sure the child completes the work on his or her own.  Check to make sure all problems are answered and correct.  Have your child go back and correct mistakes.
  7. Provide a quiet place to do homework at a regular time each day.  Students need a regular routine.
  8. Keep pencils, paper, and other supplies handy at home.
  9. Teach your child to be organized.
  10. Keep the enthusiasm for learning alive.  Build on small successes. Maintain your child’s self esteem.
  11. Make sure your child knows the study guides before major tests.  Fifth grade is full of new skill the students have to learn.  Help to quiz them or let them make flashcards to self quiz.  The majority of the test questions will come from these study guides.
  12. Check the papers that come home weekly.  Your child will have a weekly Monday folder.  It will contain your child’s behavior report and graded papers for the previous week.  Graded papers will be stapled together to make sure all papers have been seen.  Sign the folder and return it to school on Tuesday.  Keep the graded papers.  Help your child to correct mistakes and look for repeating patterns in the mistakes.  See if your child keeps making the same mistake when doing a math problem.

Homework

Your child will not have homework on the weekends.  Your child should have about an hour’s worth of homework on week nights.  If you child is absent, and you can do so, please make arrangements to have your child’s work picked up by the end of the day or during my planning time.  Please understand that if you come by after my planning time it will be hard for me to find the time to get the work together.  You may also call ahead and the office will let me know that the work needs to be gotten together.  Your child will have a homework assignment book to write down homework.  Students are responsible for writing down homework.  The homework will be written on the board for the students to copy.

Math – A test will be given after every fifth lesson.  New skills are taught every day and previous skills repeated daily.

Spelling & Reading – Tests on Fridays.  Students will also be taking AR tests on the reading stories from the book.

AR – Students are required to achieve nine AR points each Nine weeks.  This will count as a reading grade.  Your child will have an AR folder to keep up with.  Encourage them to not wait until the last minute. Student may exchange library books every day if they wish.
